Over the years, a lot of the artwork on our specialty gift packaging celebrates the natural beauty of Hawaii. When we recently saw the artwork and designs by Hawaii-based artist, Lauren Roth, we knew she shared that same source of inspiration. And from that inspiration and appreciation came a collaboration, in the form of a limited-edition gift box, featuring Lauren’s lovely artwork, entitled From the Heart, paired with an assortment of Big Island Candies’ confections, created by our family of dedicated artisans. This is a work of art—inside and out.
We thought this would be a great opportunity to share a bit of backstory, not only about Lauren, but her creative process as well. Who better to do this than the artist herself, in her own words!
Let’s Meet Lauren!
“I’ve always viewed my art as an extension of myself. My brain processes everything I see and touch into an art piece and my hands are always moving as if I should be painting. In October 2012, I decided to pursue art full-time, and since then, I’ve expanded into textile design and a full line of apparel, home décor, and accessories. I have had the privilege of collaborating with companies such as Hermes, Nordstrom, Rip Curl, Kate Spade, LeSportsac, and most recently, Big Island Candies!
In 2018, my husband and I opened the Lauren Roth Art Gallery in our hometown of Kailua, to not only create a space to display my work and products, but to also support local art and artists in the community. Although art is my passion, I find the most joy in connecting with people through my work. Any time I can bring a little bit of joy through bright colors and whimsical creations, it fills my heart.
I created the From the Heart piece in the Spring of 2024. Like most of my work, it was inspired by flowers I saw on a hike. The beautiful contrast of red ginger and white hibiscus flowers really stuck out to me. I was going through a period of change, and experiencing a delightful burst of creativity during that time. A lot of times, what is happening in my life is what guides my art.
The color palette is noticeably different from my normal pastels. After I finished it, I explored the meaning of orange in color theory and discovered that it symbolizes changing seasons, creativity, and represents transformation and movement as a whole. It felt like it came right from my heart, which is why I titled it “From the Heart.” I hope the colors bring a burst of joy and a sense of peace to you, too!”
