Here at Big Island Candies, our line of Signature Shortbreads has evolved over the decades to include everything from our original Macadamia Nut Shortbread and Milk Chocolate Dipped Macadamia Nut Shortbread to Coconut, Lemon, Pineapple, Taro, Guava Macadamia Nut, and many others.
Our newest creative confection, the Two-In-One Shortbread, combines two of our most popular flavors—Macadamia Nut and Chocolate Macadamia Nut—into one cookie! They’re the same fresh, high-quality shortbread flavors that Big Island Candies is renowned for, now together in a unique design—something deliciously different to enjoy! Essentially, our Macadamia Nut Shortbread features a center band of Chocolate Macadamia Nut Shortbread that wraps around the top and the bottom of the cookie. Now both flavors can be enjoyed in every bite! And to all the chocolate lovers out there—keep reading!
In addition to the gift box of Two-In-One Shortbread, there’s another gift box featuring this new shortbread, but with a Chocolate Layer along the bottom of each cookie (includes approximately nine shortbreads with a layer of milk chocolate; nine with dark chocolate). Before you take that first bite, here’s a little background about this shortbread series.
The Origin of an Original
Innovation has always been one of the things = we keep in mind at Big Island Candies. We embrace what’s new, while retaining what’s best of what’s classic. In the case of our Two-In-One Shortbread, it’s based on two of our timeless shortbread flavors, but crafted in such a way that the final product, in both design and overall enjoyment experience, can definitely be considered an innovative indulgence.
To give you a little insight into this delicious development, our team had actually been working on a totally different design for a new shortbread. But, as is the case with the creative process concerning confections, we tested, then tasted, followed by more testing and more tasting. We realized that the double flavor would be great, but that particular design concept wasn’t going to be practical for us to pursue. So, back to the drawing board.
Our team put their thinking caps (and hairnets) back on and came up with the Two-In-One design you see here. In all actuality, we’ve been preparing for this latest launch for a while now. Many of you may remember our limited-edition Matcha (green tea) Azuki (sweet red bean) Shortbread Assorted Combo, and our Piña Colada (coconut and pineapple) Shortbread Assorted Combo from a few years back. Both donned the two-in-one design, with each gift box including the non-dipped version, plus ones diagonally dipped in a creamy white coating. This time around, instead of diagonally dipping the macadamia-nut-meets-chocolate-macadamia-nut incarnation in milk chocolate or dark chocolate, we decided to go with our new Chocolate Layer style. We launched two products in November 2022: our Macadamia Nut Shortbread – Milk Chocolate Layer and Macadamia Nut Shortbread – Dark Chocolate Layer. These create a beautiful balance of cookie and chocolate, especially perfect for those who are looking for some extra chocolate in every bite.
Dipped Shortbreads Haven’t Disappeared
As we mentioned earlier, we love embracing something new—a flavor, even a new way of doing things—but we also hold true to the tried-and-true. Yes, we’ve introduced our Chocolate Layer shortbreads in late 2022 and now in spring 2023 our Two-In-One Shortbread and Two-In-One Shortbread – Chocolate Layer option, but don’t get us wrong: Our famous, award-winning, diagonally dipped shortbreads are still very much available. They’ve become iconic, thanks, in part, to our loyal customers who’ve enjoyed and shared them with friends and family as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, the holidays, and many other special occasions year after year. As many of you already know, when you visit our Hilo Flagship Store, you can look through large windows right into the Factory and see our dedicated artisans dipping shortbreads by steady hand into chocolate. It doesn’t take long to realize these skilled individuals have elevated our diagonal dipping method into an art form. And when something is considered an art form, you keep it around for all to admire and enjoy.
